WE PLAY LAFF HOLE'S 5th ANNIVERSARY JUNE 2nd!

2010 May 21: Five years ago, our good friend Kevin Hyder started Laff Hole with his crew, the People's Republic of Komedy. While Seattle Magazine has named it Seattle's
"Best Comedy Show," it wouldn't take long to find even nicer things written by the Stranger, Seattle Weekly, the P.I., and the Seattle Times. They've taken their show to Bumbershoot and Sasquatch many times, and in the face of many of their comedians becoming national acts (and starting regular New York and Los Angeles shows,) they've always stayed true to Seattle's Laff Hole as a regular, inexpensive night to see brand new comedy by familiar faces.

We've signed on to play their huge 5th anniversary show June 2nd at Chop Suey. Trust us, this thing is gonna be amazing... It starts with an hour of the Pale Pacific, then short sets by the best comedians both local and not local, then it finishes with a headline set by Seattle John Keister of Almost Live fame. Don't want stay up late? We go on right after 9. Want to stay up late? There's a brilliant show for you to see. If you were to add another plus side, it would be a Win Win Win. And that's pretty epic.

6/2 at Chop Suey. Doors at 9, we play right away. $7, 21+

GREG'S DRUMMING FOR FAIR MAY 14th

2010 May 1: Every time I get a new record, I hope it's the best I've ever heard. The same goes for movies. A couple weeks ago I heard Fair's new "Disappearing World" and I immediately liked it. But the next day, when I was listening to it for the fourth time, I realized something else was going on... It was officially my new favorite record. I love it when that happens.

Cut to 2 weeks later when I was practicing with the band for their May 14th show at the new Hard Rock Cafe in Seattle... Kind of a surreal experience playing your favorite new songs with the actual band who wrote them. When does that EVER happen? You know when you're at a show and you dream that the band will suddenly need your help on the next song? That happened. FINALLY.

So, May 14th at the Hard Rock Cafe. Come see me geek out over my favorite new songs with the coolest guys of all time, FAIR...

MEET AVELINE ARCHER

2010 April 16:We're so excited to announce Gabe and Tirzah had an amazingly beautiful baby girl named Aveline the evening of April 3rd. Tirzah and Aveline were in perfect health the whole way through the process, minus the occasional sick stomach. And by "occasional" I mean "Oops, I didn't mean to puke everything."

Click to view gallery It's been two weeks and the three of them are still beaming... You'll understand what I mean next time you see them. It may be because she's a pretty talented sleeper, which has caused us all to wonder why we don't take more naps in life... It's time we re-thought our sleeping arrangement as Americans. We suggest you add a late-morning and mid-afternoon nap to your plans. Just saying.

As of right now, it's unclear whether Aveline will choose to write songs on the guitar or Rhodes piano. Since Gabe has chosen the Rhodes exclusively, we assume she'll choose the other... You know how kids are.

CAM'S ON TOUR IN SWEDEN

2010 March 30: If you are a liner note junkie like me, you probably already know that our guitarist, Cameron Nicklaus, has recorded all of our records. He's also worked on a lot of other records in Seattle, including the latest from Band of Horses and Boat, to name I guess 2... I only named 2 there. But there are many, many more from the last 6 years that he's had a hand in making. He comes from a long line of Nicklaus audio engineers... When you and I were taking apart Legos and puzzles, he was taking apart a barely working 2-inch 8-track out in his dad's home studio. Let's just say it... That's pretty adorable.

theresaLast year he toured Sweden with a great singer/songwriter named Theresa Anderson, whom he met through her husband, Arthur. (Cam helped record Arthur's band World Leader Pretend with Phil Ek for Warner Brothers.) Right after he was done with our live record, he flew to New Orleans to record her live DVD (which is available for presale now)... He flew back home, played our live record release, and promptly left town again to do sound on another tour of Sweden.

Once he gets back, we'll get to work on finishing the demos for our upcoming record... It'll be nice to have the magic that is Cameron Nicklaus back in town.

WHAT WE'VE BEEN UP TO

2010 March 23: This site and the new live record are signs that we've been up and running for quite a while now, but are just now showing it. We've been busy doing two things: Mixing this record and writing a new one. We have more than an album's worth of new songs that we love, and are about to begin recording them. (which let's be honest, might take us a while like everything else.) BUT, we've had a LOT of people from outside the Pacific Northwest ask when we'll be back in their town, and the answer is we don't know. Once the new record is done we'd love to get out of town for a little while, but who knows when that will be, or what it will look like... So we came up with the idea that we could record a show and release it in lieu of driving to Fresno. Nothing against Fresno, obviously... We just have other plans tonight.

Anyway, it's been so great for us to hang out and write new songs every week. Early on we heard from a label guy that rule #1 with bands is that they break up. It's really hard to stay together in a creative venture like that. It's also SUPER awkward to grow up in front of people in a van... You start to realize what a selfish jerk you are when three guys are staring at you for 8 weeks in a row in small spaces. We totally get why bands don't work out, but we've always said we'd be friends when the band ended, which in turn has informed how we treat each other while IN the band... Oddly enough, THAT has kept us together, and usually excited to see each other. It's funny that when bands stop touring, they almost always break up. In our case, staying home has kept us together. I (Greg) can't imagine a time where the PP won't be a band in some sense of the word. Hooking up every week only brings more ideas of things we could do as a band, and we all get more excited about it as time goes on. (The live record is the first of four projects we have in mind.) You really should start playing music with your friends every once in a while, you won't believe things you get out of it personally.

So, that's a little update. Check back for some fun things we have planned for the site...

all the best,
The Pale Pacific
